Following the experiences of Joseph Pousset, I sowed a field of rye in association with crimson clover. Both sown at the same time, the clover broadcast and the rye drilled.
Weed control in the first year’s test was excellent but there was too much clover and it affected rye yield.
This time I tried a 3 tiered approach. Rye, lower growing oats, and a underlay of clover. Clover density was reduced to 6kg/ha.
The field was high, dry, stony ground with very little soil depth. Weed control excellent and yields (no fertiliser) acceptable. Oat/Rye mix 2.5T/Ha. Clover 300kg/Ha.
